What is your daily hair routine?
Curly hair is drier than straight hair so it's best not to wash it every day, giving that the natural oils a chance to work through to the ends. So I wash my hair every other day or even every third day. I put in a few different products such as glazing, curl enhancer, and medium-hold gel. I blow-dry it with a diffuser, with my head upside-down so that the roots give lift to the hair. I then use hairspray to help the curls hold their shape and be less frizzy.
Do you have any other "routines" that you add to that, but don't do every day? If so, what are they?
I will use a homemade hot oil treatment, about once a month, to give moisture. I will put it in overnight and then wash my hair the next morning. I just use extra-virgin olive oil, or regular conditioner from the bottle.
Do you use chemicals in your hair?
Only the ones as listed with my after shower products. And those I would never do without! Each strand of my hair is fairly fine, but I have a lot of them, so frizz is a big issue and the only way to calm it is with product.
Do you use heat (hair dryer, curling iron, flat iron, etc) on your hair?
Yes, I try to let my hair dry naturally whenever possible, but because it takes hours for that to happen I often have to use heat.
Have you ever straightened your hair? Why or why not? What were/are your thoughts on straightening curly hair?
I will sometimes straighten my hair with a ceramic flatiron but not often since it dries it out. Ceramic irons are the only ones that get hot enough without over-damaging the hair for it to be effective on curly hair. Even then, the process takes me about 40 minutes.
What is your favorite way to wear your hair?
I like to wear it big and curly. I even back-comb the top of my head to get some height so that there's an evenness about it. If it's big and full on the sides but flat on top, it just doesn't look right.
What do you like best about your curls?
I like that I've been able to cut my own hair most of my life, because with curls you don't have to be so precise as with straight hair. It's very forgiving.
What is the worst hair advice you've ever received?
Leaving curly hair all one length. One length produces flatter curls on the outside and tighter ones on the inside. A hairdresser I went to would only ever trim my hair so that it was all one length. Eventually I took to cutting my own hair and liking it a lot more because I cut some layers into it myself.
If there was one thing you could say or one tip you could give a young person with curls, what would it be?
Embrace them, even when fashion says that straight hair is the 'modern' look. Curls are always in style, because you can do one hairdo in the morning and a different one for evening. The spray-bottle of water gives new energy to curls and even an elastic band dent or hat-head ring can be made to disappear by spraying and tousling the hair upside-down and letting it dry to its natural state.
If there was one thing you could say or one tip you could give to the Parents of young children with curls, what would it be?!
A child's self-image is largely wrapped up in how they look. Girls especially. Finding products that help smooth the frizz, and coming at it with an open mind to experiment and find out what works is a good idea.

Getting curly hair cut is a big deal. Most hairdressers cut hair when it is wet, and with curly hair you cannot tell where the curls will bounce back to when it is wet. The best way for curly hair to be cut is when it is dry. Many hairdressers are not confident about cutting curly hair and there aren't many out there who are. Be patient, because it is worth finding one who is. It takes curly hair longer to grow out from a bad cut since it grows in circles and not in a straight line.

is a new experience for me! But I'm learning there are many uses for it. Most commonly it is used as a moisturizer. Whether it works because it's a fat and locks in the moisture so the hair can use it - or whether it is moisturizing in and of itself - I don't know! I've read things from different sources that seem to conflict with each other. But the one thing that still holds true, either way you look at it - Shea Butter can help moisturize your hair!
